What is social networking?
Social networking is a new catch phrase, so let’s take a moment to clarify exactly what it is. Social networking refers to what has previously been known as “word of mouth advertising”. In terms of social media, word of mouth advertising occurs through an online community as opposed to the off line face-to-face conversations. Social networking is just like traditional networking except it is done online, and therefore has the potential of reaching a far larger audience which can be more targeted also.
A social network is an online community where people meet others and share common interests. Typically business owners believe that this form of word-of-mouth advertising would take a lot of time and be difficult. This in fact is a myth. It is very easy to become part of an online community, and it does not in fact take up a lot of time in order to gain the results you’re looking for for your business.
Here is a brief overview that will give insight into the possibilities and benefits of using social networking as part of your business promotion and branding.
In order to use a network to get beneficial results it is important to do this:
•Find the right network—the one where your target audience is spending its time. This may be a large network like Facebook, or a more niche network with a smaller focus like Dogster.
•Make sure you network with the right customers, and keep self promoters and fake celebrities out of your network. This will help you send targeted marketing releases out to your true target audience.
•Keep your social network identity in front of the customers that you acquire on the social network. This can be done by writing comments, writing blogs, sending messages, and bulletins.
This advice is just the tip of the iceberg for what can be accomplished in a social network environment. Any and every business should consider creating a strong social network campaign, as it can increase your exposure with your customers and keep your business at the front of your target market for the long term .
